Fitness, Olympics and Paralympics: How to Keep the Momentum Going

I hope my article finds you well :)

It’s about three weeks since the end of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. How do you feel? Some of us may feel sad as it was entertaining to watch them and at the same time motivating and inspiring. But the real questions to ask ourselves are:

What now then?

Have you been motivated and inspired to keep the Olympics and Paralympics momentum going?

If you are not sure about the meaning of the word momentum, here is the wonderfully “academic” dictionary definition, p = mv where the momentum (p) is the product of the mass (weight) and the velocity (speed) of an object. Hah! I am guessing that this is not the definition you were expecting. Well believe it or not the formula is actually applicable to the Olympics and Paralympics…

Let me explain.

In life to keep the momentum going, we can apply the same formula as following:

p (momentum) = m (drive) * v (speed = rate of change) where the momentum is given by the drive to achieve your goal multiplied by the rate of change from where you are now (A) to where you want to be (B). Therefore in order to have the greatest momentum you need to have a high amount of drive to achieve your goals, and ensure that you follow this up with the speed of your actions to move you from where you are now (A) to what you want to achieve (B) (goal/success).

The key is taking prompt actions whilst you are driven by your motivation!

To make it personal to you, think about when you attended a self-development course or seminar.  After it finished did you just carry on with your everyday life? You have learnt new techniques, skills and acquired more information to improve the quality of your life. However if you do not put any of these into practice you will not make any changes in your life.

The secret is to Take Action. This is the actual doing part and what I call the great pitfall where many dreams, goals and ambitions die. Anyone can start but very few finish. Many people can take action once, twice or may even keep going for a few months but eventually they die out. It frustrates me when I would enter a new challenge and I will see the competition leap out in front and get off to a faster and more successful start. Then I found the single discipline that gives me the extra edge to beat anybody at almost anything, and that’s CONSISTENCY.

A lot of people become enthusiastic about new goals or achievements, and they charge out of the gate in an explosion of activity—but their intensity and commitment quickly crackle. Meanwhile, those who begin the journey with less flash but a greater commitment to consistency eventually catch up to their flamboyant peers and leave them in the dust. Do what most people don’t: Stay consistent.

We will explore the concept of CONSISTENCY further in my next article, so stay tuned! J

I hope this article was not too much of a lecture and scientifically orientated. I really enjoyed writing it especially because it brought me back to my physics lectures in school. Those were the best times of my life!

‘Take a look at what you have.
Think of all you did to get it.
Remember it takes only one second to lose everything so treasure it!’
~ Viv

So think about how much progress you have made so far and what you have done to achieve it…think about all the time and efforts spent doing exercises, running, sweating, etc. Think about what you have already sacrificed to get where you are, cakes, sweets, crisps, social events, etc…Was it worth it? It was for me and I am sure it was for you too! …Think also that you will lose all of your achievements, if you decide to give up now, please keep the momentum going, you owe it to yourself!

“You cannot strike fire from flint if you stop halfway” ~ Nichiren Daishonin

You know that you have the power and the control to do it! So, keep the momentum going to achieve your goals and you will be celebrating the body, the fitness level and the healthy lifestyle you have always dreamed of! It is possible and you have demonstrated this to be true over the past few months. With strong determination and dedication success will follow! After all, “It’s easier to wake up early and work out than it is to look in the mirror each day and not like what you see.” ~ Jayne Cox

So, what choice are you going to make? Will you see obstacles or opportunity? Will you give up or keep the momentum going?

……. and while you carefully make your life changing choice, think about this as a final question:

Why will you succeed?

‘I succeed because I am willing to do the things others are not. I will fight against the odds. I will sacrifice. I am not shackled by fear, insecurity or doubt. I feel those emotions — drink them in and then swallow them away to the blackness of hell. I am motivated by accomplishment, not pride. Pride consumes the weak — kills their heart from within. If I fall — I will get up. If I am beaten — I will return. I will never stop getting better. I will never give up –ever. This is why I succeed!’ – Unknown

Remember that nothing worth having comes easy, enjoy the process! Knowing that this takes time, just be committed to doing your best every day! So you need to keep your goals, your prospective and your eyes on your objective. Life is what you make itSituations are how you take it…‎”Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.”
– Herbert Otto
